The Blue Mountains are located on the eastern end of the island between Kingston to the south and Port Maria to the north. Grown at over 7000 feet above sea level, in the highest mountains of the Caribbean, it is one of the highest grown coffees in the world. At this altitude you are going to find the climate cool with perpetual mist and ample rainfall. It is the mist, by the way, that gives the mountains a bluish appearance, hence the name. Beans grown in higher altitudes are larger and have a taste that is superior to beans cultivated in lower altitudes. An incredible mix of volcanic rich soil, high altitude and excellent drainage make the perfect recipe for this fine coffee.
The standard of quality for Jamaica Blue Mountain is incomparable with any other coffee. The Coffee Industry Regulation Act has established with a very precise method of quality control for the beans. Only Arabica beans, that are grown in this precise geographical location, under very specific conditions, will be certified 100% Blue Mountain Coffee. Beans that do not pass the rigorous screening process might very well be suitable for other brands of coffee, but not for Jamaica Blue Mountain. Being that the area perfect for cultivation is rather small, only 28 miles long and 12 miles wide, the amount of coffee that they can produce is very limited and the demand is very high.
